Wedding Music 101: Choosing Your Band or DJ
A wedding DJ/MC does a great deal more than play the music at your wedding. They are responsible for several important aspects of your ceremony and...
Your DJ is an essential part of how your wedding reception functions. This person keeps things running on schedule and, most importantly, sets the mood for a fantastic event! Refer to these critical questions when shopping for your wedding DJ:
You want to know that the person you are working with and spending time working with is actually going to be the person MCing and DJ’ing your wedding. Finding out that the person you’ve been talking to about special playlists for the past 6 months isn’t actually going to be there can be a little disappointing.
You still remember those events or parties where the DJ played everything you wanted to hear and made everyone get up and dance until they couldn’t boogie anymore? With the right DJ, you too can have a night like this, and you should! All of your friends and family together enjoying themselves laughing and having fun, why not? So, when you ask the question about their announcement style, you’ll want to look for key components such as smiling and happy, energetic, open to your style of music, and overall positive personality.
Some bands or DJs bring things to help get the party started for you and your guests be it disco balls, strobe lights, etc. They may also have signage that you may be interested in renting as well, so this is an important question to ask in case you’re looking to create a more personalized piece or additional upgrade to your wedding décor.
If you’re not working with a preferred vendor for your venue, it’s important for your DJ or band to confirm the acoustic of your reception area so that the sound they put out sounds amazing and crystal clear!
Most professionals who have been in the game awhile know what is expected of them. However, you never want to have your MC in a t-shirt and jeans. They should be prepared for dressing appropriately for events such as a wedding. Clean and attire, nice shoes, button up collared shirt and dress pants, or even all black shirt and dress pants is acceptable attire.
This is one of those things that you can’t always assume. Confirm they have everything. It’s always a safe bet to confirm aspects with the band or DJ prior to your big day. Bringing names of the artists or songs is helpful as well. Then later you can determine when you’d like these specific songs played, and how the DJ or band can accommodate.
This is good to call out before signing contracts. You’ll want to know how long your wedding will be and confirming the needs of music for your reception. Once the time of service is confirmed, you know how long you can boogie with Aunt Jane and Uncle Joe!
